7. Burner Home

Isaac Burner, a native of South Carolina, was an early settler in New Salem, arriving a few years before Abraham Lincoln. Although this reconstructed cabin is made of hewn logs, the original probably was of round logs and located on a different lot.

Burner's son Daniel, who was four years younger than Lincoln, recalled Lincoln as a boarder in their home: "He was a good man in the house. He was one of the finest, smartest boys I ever knew. He was even at that time called 'Honest Abe,' although I don't know how he came by the name. The first I ever knew him the boys called him that."
