12. Herndon Home

James Rowan Herndon, an early settler and cousin of Lincoln's future law partner William H. Herndon, built a cabin on this location with his brother James. The Herndon brothers also owned a store, which they sold to Lincoln and William Berry.

Rowan Herndon recalled that Lincoln boarded with him after service in the Black Hawk War and was very fond of children. Herndon was married to Elizabeth Graham, Mentor's sister, who died in 1833 after his gun accidentally discharged.
