21. Dr. Francis Regnier Office

One year after Lincoln arrived in New Salem, Dr. Francis Regnier of Marietta, Ohio, purchased a cabin from Henry Sinco and set up his practice. Stout, witty and eccentric, Dr. Regnier was the son of a French physician.

In 1834 he married Sophia Ann Goldsmith and moved to nearby Clary's Grove, but continued using this location as his office for several years. Like a number of other New Salem residents, he later moved to Petersburg, where he lived the rest of his life. In the 1840s he represented Menard County in a Whig Party nominating convention, where his vote was pledged for Abraham Lincoln.
