26. Equestrian Statue

You can see this statue of Abraham Lincoln on horseback near the entrance of New Salem State Park on Route 97. It's located on the west side of the highway. In 1964 the sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington gave this bronze statue to the state of Illinois. It depicts a young Lincoln absorbed in studying, as was typical of him when he lived in this pioneer village.

Henry Dummer, who practiced law in the 1830s, recalled visits from Lincoln: "Lincoln used to come to our office -- Stuart's and mine -- in Springfield from New Salem and borrow law books. Sometimes he walked, but generally rode."
