4. New Salem Schoolhouse

Mentor Graham, who moved to Sangamon County from Kentucky in 1828, ran a subscription school about half a mile from this reconstructed building. Ann Rutledge, whom Abraham Lincoln courted, was among his pupils.

Ann's brother Robert said she was "esteemed the brightest mind of the family, was studious, devoted to her duties of whatever character." Graham also tutored Lincoln informally, helping him to master surveying calculations.
