Thomas Jones Bust in Lincoln, Illinois

Shortly before Lincoln left Springfield, Illinois, for Washington, D.C., Thomas D. Jones arrived from Ohio to model a bust from life. Although the president-elect had a full schedule in early 1861, he allowed Jones some sittings in the St. Nicholas Hotel.

Jones recalled, "The work once begun, he became a subject of great interest, but a very difficult study. His early mode of life and habits of thought had impressed hard and rugged lines upon his face, but a good anecdote or story before commencing a sitting much improved the plastic character of his features." This copy of the bust is owned by the Lincoln Heritage Museum.
