3. Trent Brothers Home

The year after Abraham Lincoln arrived in New Salem, the brothers Alexander and Marvin Trent built a cabin like this for their families. A few months later Alex volunteered for service in the Black Hawk War, entering Lincoln's company as a corporal.

After the war, Lincoln and William Berry bought a store on credit which failed, and their interests were assumed by the Trent brothers. They, in turn, also failed and sold out to John McNeil, who finally moved the business to Petersburg.
