Grant was passing through town with a company of volunteers from Jo Daviess
County, Illinois, when Governor Richard Yates asked him to stay and drill
soldiers. Grant remained a few months, also handling paperwork
in this office, although he confessed, "papers are not my forte."Adjutant General's Office
The most famous occupant of this room was
Ulysses S. Grant, whom President Lincoln appointed commander of the Union
Army during the Civil War. Lincoln missed meeting him in Springfield
by a few months -- he left February 11, 1861, and Grant arrived on April 26.
