By this time the sign by the entrance bore an ironic
message: "All persons found using firearms on these grounds
will be prosecuted with the utmost rigor of the law."Evergreen Cemetery Gate
While President Lincoln and the official procession moved through
town, other visitors hurried to the ceremonies through the
local cemetery gatehouse. This area, known as Cemetery Hill,
had been the site of heavy Confederate bombardment during the battle.
