Tinsley Building, Springfield, Illinois

Lincoln's Law Office

Over the years Abraham Lincoln and his law partners rented space in various locations around Springfield. The restored Tinsley Building on the downtown square is the only building still standing where Lincoln had a law office. It was almost new when Lincoln moved into it in 1843 with Stephen T. Logan. They rented an office on the third floor above the federal courtroom.

In 1844 Lincoln dissolved his partnership with Logan and took William Herndon as a junior partner. In a sense, their association continued until Lincoln's death in 1865. Before he left for the White House, Lincoln told Herndon, "If I live I'm coming back sometime, and then we'll go right on practising law as if nothing had ever happened."
