The House of Representatives that Congressman
Lincoln knew met in the chamber depicted in this 19th-century print.
Here he worked with colleagues such as Indiana's Caleb Smith,
Georgia's Alexander Stephens, and Pennsylvania's David Wilmot.
On February 21, 1848, Lincoln was present when 81-year-old Congressman
and former President John Quincy Adams collapsed. Lincoln was named to a
committee to organize the funeral and on February 26 he attended the funeral
in the House chamber. The room is now known as Statuary Hall. <Click on picture to continue. Back to Tour Home |
